# Change the data sync frequency

Frequent data synchronization ensures reports are based on the latest information, enabling timely decisions, real-time monitoring, and quick adjustments. It improves reporting reliability and helps track emerging trends. However, less frequent syncs can also be beneficial, reducing system strain and preventing data overload. They may be preferred when working with aggregated data or focusing on long-term trends. The ideal sync frequency depends on the company's needs, balancing speed, system efficiency, and data accuracy.

## Change the data sync frequency

Sync frequency can be adjusted at both the [data source](/add-a-data-source) and [dataset](/understanding-datasets) levels, based on your reporting needs. However, certain operational limitations imposed by the data provider may affect availability. Here's how to adjust the sync frequency for each:

### Data source

Changes at the data source level applies to all of its basic and custom metrics created without using datasets. This change will not affect any datasets or metrics created from datasets.

To change the sync frequency for a data source:

1. Navigate to [Data Manager > Data Sources](https://app.databox.com/data-manager/connected) or [Account Management > Data Manager > Datasets](https://account.databox.com/data-manager/data-sources).
2. Locate the data source in the list.
3. Click the down arrow next to the data source and select **Change sync frequency**.
4. Choose your preferred sync frequency from the options provided.
5. Click **Save** to apply the changes.

### Dataset

Changes at the dataset level applies only to the selected dataset and any metrics created from it. This allows for more granular control over the sync frequency for specific datasets.

To change the sync frequency for a dataset:

1. Navigate to [Data Manager > Datasets](https://app.databox.com/data-manager/datasets) or [Account Management > Data Manager > Datasets](https://account.databox.com/data-manager/datasets).
2. Locate the dataset or data source in the list.
3. Click the down arrow next to the dataset or data source and select **Select columns**.
4. Click **Continue** to proceed.
5. Select the preferred sync frequency from the available options.
6. Click **Save** to confirm the changes.

### Billing

When activating an option not included in your plan, a prorated charge will be applied for the time remaining until the next billing cycle. This charge will appear as a new add-on item in your subscription.

If you decide to switch back to a frequency available in your plan, any purchased add-ons will remain active until the end of the current billing cycle. During this time, you can choose a different data source or dataset to enable the option.

If no new data source or dataset is selected, the add-on will be automatically canceled at the end of the billing cycle.

Data providers may restrict how often data can be retrieved from their APIs, or data might only be accessible after a certain time due to internal processes and regulations.

In some cases, Databox may also impose sync frequency limits to maintain the reliability and stability of services for all users.
