How to access Google Optimize data using the Metric Builder for Google Analytics (Report)

Google is officially sunsetting Universal Analytics on July 1, 2023

    Google Analytics 4 is the recommended replacement. Due to the differences in tracking logic used in Universal Analytics vs Google Analytics 4, historical data will not transfer from one to the other.
      Because of this, it's important to get Google Analytics 4 set up as soon as possible in order to start accumulating data in this new system.

How to access Google Optimize data using the Metric Builder for Google Analytics

In order to create Custom Metrics to report on your Google Optimize data, you must use the Metric Builder for Google Analytics. Google Optimize data can be accessed by adding either Experiment ID or Variant as the Dimension

How to access Google Optimize data using the Metric Builder for Google Analytics [Example]

Let's say we want to report on "Sessions by Variant" from Google Optimize. 

 

  1. Navigate to Metrics  > Custom Metrics and click + New Custom Metric button
  2. Select your Google Analytics Account from the Data Source drop-down list
  3. From the Metric drop-down list, we'll select Sessions
  4. From the Dimensions drop-down list, we'll select Experiment ID
  5. In order to accurately explain this Metric, we'll name it "Sessions by Variant (Google Optimize)"
  6. Click  Preview Data to generate a Data Preview of the Custom Metric  
  7. Once we confirm that these are the results we're looking for, we'll click  Save to save the Custom Metric.
